Dear Future Sixth-Former,

Congratulations on your results and successful application to Kingsbridge College Sixth Form. You are now part of one of the most successful Sixth Forms in the country! In order to make your first days as smooth as possible, there are some key pieces of information for you to read through and action in this letter.

An essential admissions form and associated documents can also be found on this portal; please ensure you and your parents complete this before the start of term:

Start of Term

On your first day, arrive by 8.45am and go straight to the Sixth Form Centre where you will meet the Sixth Form team and your new tutor. Here you will be given all the information you need to get started in Sixth Form, including your new tutor group and your timetable. Those of you new to the college, please arrive at 8:35 to meet your volunteer buddies, they will be in Sixth Form reception to meet you.

You will spend periods 1 and 2 with your tutor for induction activities to support your successful start to Sixth Form life. This will include: full induction of the expectations and responsibilities of being a KCC Sixth Form student; issuing your Student Handbook, your timetable and your new laptop.

This morning will be your chance to ask any questions or concerns you have about anything you may have. Periods 3-5 you will have your first lessons as per your timetable.

Thursday 8th September

The day will start with Assembly from Mrs Graham. Please line up at the top door for the hall where you will be met by your tutor. The rest of the day you will follow your timetabled lessons. Any concerns or questions, please speak to your tutor in the first instance.

Your registration periods and tutorial periods are an essential part of your college ‘planned hours’. Activities will be purposeful and relevant, planned particularly for you; attendance is compulsory and absence or lateness to these, as well as your supervised study periods will be taken just as seriously as for any other lesson.

Bridging Work

Article 28: The Convention places a high value on education.  Young people should be encouraged to reach the highest level of education of which they are capable

Well done to those of you who have been working hard on the bridging tasks set by all subjects on induction day. May I remind you that these tasks are a compulsory pre-requisite for entry onto the course, and teachers will expect to receive the completed tasks in the first week if you have not yet submitted this work. Therefore, please make sure you set aside some time before the start of term complete it. If you are still undecided about one or more subjects, you should complete the tasks for all the options you are considering. Please get in touch with the teacher who has set the task if you have any questions. The tasks can all be found on the college website here

Sixth Form Dress Code and Student Leadership

Article 13: Every child must be free to express their thoughts and opinions and to assess all kinds of information, as long as it is within the law.

We do not have a uniform in Sixth Form because we believe in giving you the freedom to express your identity and feel comfortable in your chosen clothes. However, our expectations are that you dress appropriately for an ‘educational setting’. The dress code was consulted upon and created by the student body in 2019 and is now currently being reviewed by our Student Leadership team. Full details can be found in the Student Handbook. If you would like to contribute to any aspect of Sixth Form life, we are always happy to hear your thoughts and ideas. There will also be the opportunity to become a student leader should you wish to have more responsibility and influence.

Article 12 (Respect the views of the child) When adults are making decisions that affect children, children have the right to say what they think should happen and have their opinions taken into account

Health and Wellbeing

Article 24: Every child has the right to the best health, we must provide good education on health and well-being so that children can stay healthy

As part of your right to be healthy we do not allow smoking and vaping anywhere on or within sight of college grounds. If you do habitually smoke or vape, please be aware that you are not permitted to carry smoking or vaping paraphernalia on site; students who are suspected of carrying banned items or smoking or vaping on site will be searched by a member of staff and banned items will be confiscated and destroyed in accordance with the college behaviour policy. If you would like support giving up smoking or vaping, try visiting the NHS website on the link below or your GP who will be able to support you with this.

https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/quit-smoking/nhs-stop-smoking-services-help-you-quit/

Your mental health is just as important as your physical health; if you struggle with anxiety or stress, please let your tutor, Mrs Aldworth-Jones or Gemma Marshall know and we will be able arrange support for you.

16-19 Bursary Fund

Article 2: The Convention applies to all children, whatever their race, religion or abilities; whatever they think or say, whatever type of family they come from. It doesn’t matter where children live, what language they speak, what their parents do, whether they are boys or girls, what their culture is, whether they have a disability or whether they are rich or poor. No child should be treated unfairly on any basis

Via our portal you can access an application form for the student bursary fund complete with eligibility criteria and information. If you are eligible for one of the bursary categories please complete and return the application form on or before Friday 22nd

September 2023.

Post 16 Transport

Devon County Council does not provide a universal Post-16 assisted travel scheme. The expectation is for students and parents to consider how you are going to get to and from college prior to applying and accepting a place. If there is a financial barrier around transport please do get in touch with us as we may be able to contribute towards the costs involved.

Starting at Sixth Form will be exciting but may also feel daunting. Staying focussed, organised and punctual will help you to feel more in control and lead to a successful start. Don’t worry - it’s completely normal to feel nervous! Your tutors, teachers and the Sixth Form team are all here to help and support you, to enable everyone to make the most out of their time at Kingsbridge College Sixth Form.

We can’t wait to welcome you to the beginning of the next chapter of your education.

Any questions, please get in touch with charlotte.barker@kingsbridgecollege.org.uk.

Best wishes
